About This Call

The City of Wichita is seeking an artist or artist team to create public artwork for the new East Patrol Station, located at the corner of E. Lincoln Street and S. Pinecrest Street in a mostly residential area with neighboring education institutions. The new facility is currently under construction and will house spaces uniquely designed for the Patrol Office. The public art component seeks to bridge a connection to the community it will serve.

The artist or artist team should create relevant works that serve as an icon or beacon, something of meaning to both the community and the Patrol Station, that furthers a sense of place. Art goals include creating a sense of place within the community, fostering connection between the community and the professionals of the facility, and working alongside a team of design consultants during construction and installation. The artwork location will be in highlighted areas on site or incorporated on the north façade of the newly constructed building. The Patrol Office building signage can be a consideration as well. The artist can be included in the exact placement of the artwork, considering visibility, lighting, structure, and materials, as well as relevant architectural and engineering information.

Applicants must submit 6-10 images of past large-scale public art and infrastructure projects, an annotated image list with title, media, year completed, dimensions, location, project budget, timeline, and client information for each image, a one-page letter of intent, a two-page resume or CV (or CV for each team member if applying as a team), and three professional references. Preference will be given to local professionals. Emerging artists are welcome to submit with evidence of ability to achieve expectations. All artists or teams must provide evidence of completed projects with similar budget, scale, and scope, or evidence of ability to achieve expectations such as scaled drawings, models, or photographs of relevant experience. The City of Wichita prefers to have local artists and firms involved and will give preference to artists who plan to utilize local resources including engineering consultants, concrete firms, fabricators, installation crews, lighting specialists, and landscape architects. Professional artists new to public art and those with community interaction experience are encouraged to apply. The selected artist or team will be expected to attend progress and planning meetings for the duration of the design phase after receiving Notice to Proceed. Project budget: $375,000.
