About This Call
CNL Projects, LK Architecture and the City of Wichita invite artists and artist teams with demonstrated experience completing complex, permanent outdoor public art projects to submit qualifications for one of three public art commissions for a $592,000 Arkansas River Public Art Project. This project aims to enhance the aesthetics, safety, and accessibility of the Arkansas Riverfront through downtown Wichita, creating unique experiences and spaces for the public.
The selected artist(s) will collaborate with CNL Projects, LK Architecture and the City of Wichita to conceptualize, design, fabricate, and install site-specific, permanent public art installations at one of three distinct locations along the Arkansas Riverfront. Each commission involves creating new, integrated artworks that enhance functionality and aesthetics, with each installation including a changing, perceived changing, or interactive element. Area 1 involves screening electrical utility infrastructure (approximately 900 SF, 6'-8' height). Area 2 consists of seven overhead sculptural structures integrated with custom oval benches along the riverfront walkway. Area 3 includes artistic interventions on retaining walls (12' width, minimum 42" height, 3 distinct locations) that add color, texture, visual interest, and/or light.
The total budget for all three artwork locations is $592,000, covering all costs from design through structural engineering, fabrication, site preparation, and transportation. Installation and site preparation will be managed by CNL Projects, the City of Wichita and LK Architects. A selection panel will review submissions and select 3-10 finalists to develop proposals. Finalists will be paid $1,000 to develop proposals and invited to participate in virtual interviews. Selection is based on artistic excellence, creative process, demonstrated ability with large-scale outdoor artwork, and effective communication strategies. Qualifications deadline: November 4, 2024. Finalists' design proposals due: January 24, 2024. Final artist selection: February 14, 2025. Installation: March 3, 2026 - April 1, 2026.
