About This Call
The City of Thornton is seeking up to eight unique works of art to be utilized as seating at the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center. Artists or artist teams may propose one bench design. The artwork must be original to Thornton and celebrate the activities that take place at the recreation center.
All proposed artwork must be designed to accommodate long-term use as seating, be viewable from all angles, consider the safety of park patrons especially children, celebrate creativity and art, and reflect or be consistent with the surrounding park amenities. The artwork must be durable and easily maintained. The total budget for design, execution, and installation of up to eight benches is $80,000. Artists are responsible for all itemized expenses including design, labor, materials, contracted services, operations, insurance, travel, transportation, and installation. Installation is scheduled for August 30, 2012.
Eligibility is open to Colorado residents only. Submissions must include 3 images representative of artistic content and technical competence as demonstrated through images of 3 different installed sculpture projects, and 1-3 images demonstrating the appropriateness of the proposed art or concept for this site. A selection committee including representatives from the TASHCO Board of Directors will review applications and make final recommendations. Selection criteria include artistic content and technical competence, appropriateness of the proposed art or concept, suitability of the design to the site, and thorough description of proposed materials, longevity, surface integrity, safety, durability, and maintenance requirements.
