About This Call

The City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission artists or artist teams interested in loaning existing art sculptures to be exhibited outdoors for one year. The call is open to all artists nationwide creating original three-dimensional artwork of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display. There are thirteen art pads available for exhibition: up to four located at Flamingo Linear Park and up to nine at the new Village Art Plaza.

Sculptures at Flamingo Linear Park should be between 7 to 12 feet tall. Pad dimensions include two 8'x8' pads (70,000 lbs capacity) and two 10'x8' pads (90,000 lbs capacity). Sculptures at Village Art Plaza should be between 5 to 8 feet tall, with pad dimensions of three 5'x5' pads, five 6'x6' pads, and one 10'x8' pad (all 50,000 lbs capacity). All pads have 3,000 psi minimum concrete compressive strength. Sculptures must be durable and require minimal maintenance, suitable for South Florida's subtropical climate with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. The City is open to all themes and styles as long as sculptures reflect the spirit of Sunrise and do not contain objectionable elements.

Selected artists will enter into a one-year loan agreement with the City and are responsible for installation and de-installation. Artists receive $3,500 for sculptures between 5 to 8 feet tall or $4,000 for sculptures higher than 8 feet, paid in two installments: half after installation and half after removal. The honorarium covers all expenses including travel and artist-provided property insurance. Artists assume all risk of physical damage to sculptures while in the City's care. Selection is based on design aesthetic and concepts (75 points) and technical considerations including feasibility, safety, and maintenance (25 points). Previous experience with outdoor public art installation is preferred but not required.
