About This Call

Artists are invited to submit qualifications for exterior art with a minimum 25-year lifespan for the City of St. Petersburg Sanitation Department Headquarters, a new construction project located on 28th Street North at 20th Avenue North. Completion is expected Spring/Summer 2023. The Project Committee seeks artists to design, build, and install artwork that reflects the history of the department. The artwork site is set back from 28th Street towards the front of the new building.

Installations must withstand Florida humidity, salt air, hurricane force winds, possible salt water inundation, strong UV rays, and potential unsupervised contact with children and adults. Low maintenance installations are encouraged. The City will install up to a 100-square-foot concrete pad if required. Self-contained, solar-powered proposals are preferred. Proposals may require electric wiring; conduit would be funded by the construction budget, but lighting fixtures would be funded through the artist budget. The designated art area measures 12' x 23' (276 sq. ft.) and will be laid mostly to lawn. Artwork may be placed on a concrete plinth, shelled or rocked ground, or raised above the lawn.

Artists must have experience with 2D or 3D art in public spaces, galleries, or museums, and must be based in the 48 contiguous United States or the District of Columbia. Up to three finalists will be selected to prepare site-specific proposals and will receive a $1,500 design honorarium. Submit a resume with legal street address, three .jpg files of relevant work, and a one- to two-paragraph Letter of Interest stating your interest and potential thematic concept through the CAFÉ portal by September 16, 2022 at 5PM EST. The Project Committee will review applications in October 2022, finalists will present in December 2022/January 2023, and installation is scheduled for Summer to Fall 2023.
