About This Call
The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), will commission one artist to be an artist-in-residence. During the six-month residency, the artist will work with SPU staff to research and investigate the work of SPU and develop an art master plan to guide future public art commissions integrated into SPU's drainage projects.
One artist will be commissioned to work at SPU "in residence" for approximately six months, beginning January 2016 and running through June 2016. The artist is expected to average 32–64 hours a month (8–16 hours a week preferred) in SPU's offices or field-related work. The artist will work with SPU staff and other City and King County partner programs, including the Seattle Department of Transportation and 4Culture, to examine SPU's Integrated Plan and the region's work related to protecting Seattle's waterways. The artist will be provided with work space and assigned SPU liaisons, and will participate in meetings, field visits, and one-on-one meetings with SPU and partner program staff. At the mid-point of the residency, the artist will present a progress report; upon completion, the artist will prepare and deliver a final report including an outline for the art master plan.
Using information gathered during the residency, the artist will develop an art master plan outlining potential for public art projects to be incorporated with SPU's Integrated Plan. This second phase can include additional time spent "in residence" at SPU. The art master plan should outline a conceptually cohesive, multi-disciplinary approach to art projects and programming that connects individuals and communities to SPU's efforts to protect Seattle's waterways, and must be inclusive of and address the broad diversity of Seattle's communities. Art master plan opportunities will be implemented between 2016 and 2030.
Eligibility: Individual artists residing in Washington or Oregon, or artist teams of no more than two people. Students are not eligible. Budget: $30,000 for Phase I (six months residency), $10,000 for design of art implementation projects during Phase I, and $30,000 for art master plan development and delivery plus continuation of residency for approximately six months in Phase II. All fees are inclusive of travel expenses, taxes, and other project costs.
