About This Call
The Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, seeks an artist or artist team to develop a permanent or site-integrated artwork for the publicly accessible areas of the South Recycling and Disposal Station Rebuild Project site, located in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle at 8100 2nd Ave S. The selected artist or artist team will work with the community, city and SPU staff to create a site-specific, durable artwork in the public area such as the walking path or eastern boundary of the site between the new facility and the neighborhood.
Applying artists should have specific skills in designing, fabricating and installing artwork in permanent and durable materials, the ability to understand architectural plans, and an interest in working cooperatively with design professionals, city staff and community members. Experience working in public process and public settings, and proven ability to fabricate work or to work with fabricators and installers is required. The city encourages artists whose work addresses issues of sustainability and green design to apply.
The selected artist or artist team will receive a commission of $300,000, inclusive of all fees, taxes, fabrication, delivery, installation, travel and additional site work. The artist will receive an initial design contract to design the artwork, and following design approval, a contract for fabrication and installation. The artist will join the project during the schematic design phase around early fall 2015. Design development is anticipated to begin in winter 2015 and end in winter 2016. Construction is expected to begin in early 2017 with completion in mid-late 2018. Eligibility is open to established professional artists or artist teams who are residents of the United States. Students are not eligible. Application requirements include 16 artwork images, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), resume, references, and an Image Identification List (not to exceed 500 characters for each image).
