About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture is offering a FREE two-day intensive basic training overview to artists ready to translate their exhibition experience to the public realm. This is a competitive process with up to 30 artists selected to participate.

The Public Art Boot Camp consists of two workshops totaling 16 hours of training, held on Saturday, May 9th and Saturday, May 16th, 2015, at the Experience Music Project (EMP) at Seattle Center, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Participants will complete homework to create a temporary artwork proposal between the two sessions. Workshops will cover public art opportunities (temporary, permanent, portable works), work samples and selection processes, working with architects and design professionals, contracts, budgets, materials, timelines, public presentations, fabrication, installation, and dedications.

Artists selected and completing the boot camp will be eligible to apply for an opportunity to create a temporary artwork at one of two sites later that summer at either Seattle Center or the Central Area. The program is open to artists living in Washington State who have not received a temporary or permanent public art commission. Applicants should have interest in exploring public settings and community-building. Priority will be given to emerging artists and artists from historically under-represented communities and communities of color. Artists will be selected by a panel based on submitted work samples and a written letter of interest. Selected artists will be notified by April 24th.

Application requirements: résumé (1-2 pages), letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), maximum 8 images of past work, and image identification list (not to exceed 500 characters per image). Contact Marcia Iwasaki at (206) 233-3946 or [email protected], or Elisheba Johnson at (206) 684-0182 or [email protected] with questions.
