About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, will commission one artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install site-integrated, outdoor artwork within the new Lake City Park located at 12510 33rd Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98125. The artist or artist team will work closely with Parks' design team to develop site-integrated art that enhances the experience of park-goers and passersby. A project that engages the community, frames an experience, promotes activity and/or defines a space within the park is desired. The artist should consider the character of the surrounding Lake City neighborhood, which has a high number of Chinese, East African, Latino/a and Vietnamese residents, and respond to the park's specific design and patterns of use. The artwork must be able to withstand Pacific Northwest seasonal weather conditions and circumstances common to the urban environment.

The new Lake City Park will be less than 0.25 acre and will include seating, lighting, landscaping, and a play element. The park design creates a flexible urban open space for residents, workers, and visitors. The selected artist will receive a commission of $100,000.00 (including all Washington State Sales/Use Tax) to design, fabricate and install the artwork. The artist or artist team is expected to develop and install the artwork in conjunction with the Lake City Park project timeline: Design through Spring 2017, Construction Spring 2017 - Fall 2017, Completion Fall 2017.

This call is open to professional artists residing in Washington and Oregon. Artists with no prior public art experience are not eligible to apply. Students are not eligible. Applications must include a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), resume, three references, and 16 images of completed projects highlighting ability to produce three-dimensional public artworks, plus an Image Identification List (not to exceed 500 characters for each image). The artist will be selected based on quality of concept, design and craftsmanship, visual and technical sophistication, creativity of approach, relevance of letter of interest, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the community, ability to produce durable outdoor art, ability to coordinate and collaborate with project managers and design professionals, and ability to complete projects on time and within budget. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email by end of January 2017.
