About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks an artist or artist team to develop site-specific artwork for the Georgetown Festival Street sidewalk and roadway improvement project. The selected artist will work with SDOT and SDOT consultants from design through construction of the new roadway and right-of-way structures. During the design phase, a group of community representatives will inform the process.

The artist will develop permanent public art for the Georgetown Festival Street project in collaboration with project design consultants, SDOT, community representatives and the Office of Arts & Culture. The desired artistic approach should focus on improving the pedestrian and right-of-way environment while creating a conceptual identity for the street's intended use for festivals and community events. Artwork features should be durable and consider maintenance impacts. Painted murals or other paint treatments are not appropriate for this project. The selected artist must be available to participate in a design workshop during mid-late March 2014 and meet with community stakeholders, project staff and consultants during the design phase.

The total project budget is $35,000, all-inclusive of travel expenses, taxes and other project costs. Contracting will be completed in two phases: design and engineering for $5,000 and fabrication and installation for $30,000. Current Washington state sales/use tax rates apply to all artist contracts. The call is open to artists who work or reside in Georgetown through invitation by the Office of Arts & Culture. Artists may apply as a team, but the application should clearly describe the contribution of each collaborator. Students are not eligible to apply. Applications must include ten artwork images, a letter of interest outlining your connection to Georgetown and specific interests in this project, resume, image identification list, and references. Selection will be based on strength of concept and craftsmanship, ability to produce durable outdoor art appropriate to the site, proven ability to collaborate with design professionals and community stakeholders, and demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and within budget. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email in early April 2014.
