About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks an artist to develop site-specific artworks for the Fauntleroy Way SW Boulevard Project. The selected artist will work with SDOT and SDOT consultants from design through construction of the new boulevard, collaborating with project design consultants, community representatives, and the Office of Arts & Culture. Possible sites for permanent public artwork include green spaces, median strips, and/or sidewalks, to be determined through collaboration with the project team. The artist will develop site-responsive artwork that takes into account the history, multiple uses, and busy right of way along this corridor.

Fauntleroy Way serves as a key entrance to West Seattle, a designated freight and bicycle route, and is home to numerous retail businesses and new residential developments. The boulevard project builds upon community planning work dating to 1999 and includes a streetscape plan formally adopted in 2012. Project goals include responding to community needs, improving safety and mobility for all users, and enhancing Fauntleroy Way SW's role as a key entrance to West Seattle. SDOT is evaluating improvements including improved pedestrian amenities, protected bike lanes, landscaping, and urban design features.

This call is open to professional artists or artist teams residing in Oregon, Washington, or British Columbia with prior public art experience. Students are not eligible. The total artwork project budget is $150,000, with contracting in two phases: design and engineering for $30,000 and fabrication and installation for $120,000. Applications must include a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), résumé, three references, and up to 16 images with an image identification list (not to exceed 500 characters per image). The selection panel will review applications and identify up to four finalists to interview. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email in February 2017. Project timeline: 60% design by Fall 2016, 100% design by June 2017, construction begins early 2018.
