About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with the Department of Finance and Administrative Services and Triad Development, is seeking three artists or artist teams to create large-scale murals for the construction fence surrounding the Civic Square future development site in downtown Seattle between Third and Fourth avenues and Cherry and James streets. Each mural location is one side of the fence, one city-block long and approximately 200 linear feet by 8 feet high. Each artist or artist team will paint directly on the fence; the image should reflect Seattle's vibrancy in some way—its work, cultural life, history, or commitment to sustainability. The murals may remain in place for several years.

This competition is open to professional artists living within the United States or Canada. Students are not eligible. Six finalists will be commissioned to prepare proposals; three artists or artist teams will be commissioned to create one mural each. Selected artists will have up to three months to complete their murals. The murals need to be visually dynamic to viewers from as close as three feet to as far as 100 feet away.

Budget: Six artists will each receive $750.00 to develop and present proposals. Three artists or artist teams will each receive $25,000.00, all inclusive for time and materials, to create their mural. If the selected artist or artist team is from outside the Seattle area, expenses for travel and lodging will be negotiated. Application deadline: March 10, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants must submit 16 images of past artwork in any two-dimensional medium, image descriptions (not to exceed 1,000 characters), a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), and a résumé. Artists will be notified of the selection panel's decision by late May.
