About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Finance and Administrative Services and Triad Development, Inc., seeks up to eight emerging artists to develop temporary large-scale, colorful panels for installation on an existing construction fence around the Civic Square construction site in downtown Seattle (between Third and Fourth avenues and Cherry and James streets). The five-foot-high by ten-foot-wide panels will remain on the site for approximately one year and are intended to celebrate Seattle's vibrancy, cultural life, history and position in the forefront of environmental sustainability.

Artists may apply by submitting images of available existing artwork in any two-dimensional medium. When selecting images to submit, artists should consider artwork that is proportional to or can be enlarged to fit five-foot-high by ten-foot-wide panels. A selection panel will identify two to six images per artist for up to eight artists for digital reproduction onto temporary exterior grade panels. The Office will contract with a photographer to create the digital files to be used to produce the panels. The artist fee will vary depending on the number of artworks selected. Up to eight artists will each receive between $1,000 to $3,000 honorarium. In exchange for this honorarium, the artist will be required to deliver their artwork to the photographer and meet with the fabricator to oversee color specifications. Photography, fabrication and installation costs will be paid directly by the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

This opportunity is open to emerging professional artists living within 100 miles of Seattle. An emerging artist is considered to be an artist in the early stage of their career (five years or less). Students are not eligible to apply. Applications must include 20 images. Installation of artwork panels will occur in late summer or early fall 2010. Artists who apply will be notified of the selection panel's decisions by late-July 2010. For questions, contact Deborah Paine at [email protected] or (206) 684-7132, or Marcia Iwasaki at [email protected] or (206) 233-3946.
