About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) and Seattle Parks and Recreation (PARKS) are seeking artists to create temporary art installations or social practice activities for selected Seattle parks to activate and engage their surrounding communities. Up to seven artists or artist teams will be selected to create site-specific temporary artworks or social practice activities that align with Seattle's Race and Social Justice Initiative. Artists are encouraged to have experience working with residents from historically underrepresented communities including communities of color, immigrant, and refugee communities.

Selected artists will develop proposals in coordination with Parks and Recreation and ARTS staff. Temporary artworks will be installed during warmer, drier months from June through December 2018 with durations of six to eight weeks. Artworks should activate the space and engage pedestrians and park users, coexist with already-scheduled programming, and create a unique sense of place. Two and three-dimensional works are eligible, including participatory or interactive work, workshops, or social practice activities. Artworks should not require electricity or digging/staking on park grounds when possible. All projects must consider public safety.

Eligibility is open to artists residing in Washington State who are over 18 years old, have a documented track record of making art, and are interested in working collaboratively in public settings. Each selected artist will receive $4,500, inclusive of all fees including design development, materials, installation, taxes, insurance, and associated project costs. Payment is structured as 40% upon acceptance of final proposal, 40% after documented installation, and 20% after de-installation and documentation. The application deadline is 11 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2017 (Pacific Daylight Time). Applicants must submit 16 images of past artworks, a statement describing interest in the project with a brief conceptual sketch, resume, references, and completion of required application questions. Applicants will be notified of results by email in January 2018.
