About This Call
The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is seeking seven emerging artists pre-qualified through the Public Art Boot Camp program to develop temporary artworks for the 2018 Art Interruptions in the Seattle neighborhoods of Brighton, Dunlap, and Rainier Beach. The artworks will be exhibited for approximately 12 months between August 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019. Artists who have previously received temporary or permanent commissions or exhibitions through ARTS are not eligible to apply.
Selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture and infrastructure (signal boxes, utility poles, railings, sidewalks, street trees, tree pits, etc.) along the Rainier Valley Neighborhood Greenway. The artworks should draw attention through surprise, contemplation, beauty, or humor, and must not cause damage to city property or obscure city signage. Artists should consider proposing artwork within designated areas along 45th Ave S, S Webster St, S Director St, 50th Ave S, and the improved trail connection between S Cloverdale St and S Henderson St. Each selected artist will receive $6,000 (inclusive of Washington State Sales and Use Tax), paid in three installments: 40% upon acceptance of final proposal, 40% after documented installation, and 20% after documented de-installation and project summary delivery.
Applicants must submit eight images of past artworks, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), a concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters) describing the planned installation and location, and a résumé. The concept proposal deadline is 10:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Selected artists will be notified by April 25, 2018, and must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on May 2, 2018 at 6 p.m. in Rainier Valley. Installation is scheduled for July 26-31, 2018, with de-installation in August 1-14, 2019. Artists are expected to check on artwork maintenance every other month and make minor repairs as necessary.
