About This Call
The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) and Seattle Parks and Recreation (PARKS) are seeking artists to create temporary art installations or social practice activities for selected Seattle parks to activate and engage their surrounding communities. Up to seven artists or artist teams are invited to apply. Artists who have experience working with residents from historically underrepresented communities including communities of color, immigrant, and refugee communities are encouraged to apply.
Selected artists will create site-specific temporary artwork or social practice that aligns with Seattle's Race and Social Justice Initiative. The temporary two and three-dimensional artworks will be installed during the warmer, drier months of June through September 2017 for a duration of six to eight weeks. The artwork should activate the space and engage pedestrians and park users, co-exist with already-scheduled programming, and create a unique sense of place. Proposed artworks should not require digging or staking on Parks grounds, and it is strongly recommended that installations do not have electricity requirements or are self-sufficient in their power needs.
Eligibility is open to artists residing in Washington State who are over 18 years old, have a documented track record of making art, and are interested in working collaboratively in public settings. Each selected artist will receive $4,000, inclusive of all fees including design development, materials, installation, and associated project costs. Payment will be distributed as 40 percent upon acceptance of the final proposal, 40 percent after documented installation, and 20 percent after documented de-installation and project summary delivery. Applicants must submit 16 images of past artworks, a statement describing their interest and a conceptual sketch (100 words or less), resume, references, and complete required application questions. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email in January 2017.
