About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is inviting pre-qualified artists from their Emerging Artist and Ethnic Heritage rosters, and 2015 and 2016 Public Art Boot Camp participants to develop temporary artworks for the 2016 Art Interruptions in the Rainier Valley neighborhoods, including New Holly, Othello, Brighton, Lakewood, and Seward Park. Artists must submit a concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters) describing their idea for the project. The proposal should convey the artist's ideas in a clear and exciting way and be received by May 3 at 11 p.m. A selection committee will review proposals in conjunction with artwork images on file. Selected artists will be notified by May 25, 2016.

Selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture and infrastructure (signal boxes, utility poles, railings, sidewalks, street trees, tree pits, etc.) for a four-month period from August 26, 2016 through January 8, 2017, in the Rainier Valley East West Neighborhood Greenway. The artworks should draw attention through surprise, contemplation, beauty, or humor and enliven the space with an element of the unexpected. Artworks must not cause damage to city property or obscure city signage and must be secured to prevent theft or vandalism. Artists should consider proposing artwork within specified areas on the Rainier Valley Greenway, including medians, planting strips, street trees, signal boxes, street furniture, sidewalks, parks, poles, and railings.

Each selected artist will receive $4,000, inclusive of all fees and Washington State Sales and Use Tax (9.6%). Payment is structured as 40 percent upon acceptance of the final artwork proposal, 40 percent after documented installation, and 20 percent after documented de-installation, photo documentation, and a brief project summary. Application requirements include eight images of past artworks, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), a concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters), resume, and references. Selection is based on the artist's suitability for the project, strength and artistic vision of past works, and creativity of approach. Up to seven artists will be recommended for commissions. A mandatory orientation meeting will be held on May 31, 2016, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the 2100 Building, 2100 24th Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98144. For questions, contact Marcia Iwasaki at [email protected] or (206) 233-3946.
