About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) and Seattle Parks and Recreation (PARKS) are seeking four artists or artist teams to create temporary art installations or social practice activities in selected City of Seattle parks. Artists should have experience working with residents from historically underrepresented communities including communities of color, immigrant, and refugee communities to develop culturally responsive artwork. The temporary two and three-dimensional artworks will be installed during the warmer, drier months of June through September 2016 for a duration of six to eight weeks. This call is open to artists residing in Washington State who are over 18 years old and interested in working collaboratively in public settings.

Selected artists will work with PARKS and ARTS staff to develop site-specific public art projects that activate the space, engage pedestrians and park users, and create a unique sense of place. Artwork can include two or three-dimensional installations, participatory or interactive work, workshops, or social practice activities. Potential installation sites include parks in the Central, North, Southeast, and Southwest regions of Seattle, including Cal Anderson Park, Ballard Commons Park, Hutchinson Park, and Delridge Park, among others.

Each selected artist will receive a $4,000 fee covering artist fees, design development, materials, installation, taxes, and all associated project costs. Payment will be distributed as 40 percent upon acceptance of the final proposal, 40 percent after documented installation, and 20 percent after documented de-installation and project documentation. The application deadline is 11 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2015 (Pacific Daylight Time). Applicants must submit 16 images of past artworks, a statement describing interest in the project with a 100-word conceptual sketch, resume, references, and completion of required application questions. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email by early December 2015.
