About This Call

The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Finance and Administrative Services and Triad Development, seeks up to eight emerging artists to develop temporary large-scale, colorful panels from existing artwork in any two-dimensional medium. The panels will be attached to the fence surrounding the Civic Square construction site between Third and Fourth avenues and Cherry and James streets in downtown Seattle. These panels may remain in place for approximately one year and will be added to the 20 panels now on the site. The panels are intended to celebrate Seattle's vibrancy, cultural life, history and position in the forefront of environmental sustainability.

Artists may apply by submitting images of available existing artwork in any two-dimensional medium. When selecting images to submit, the artist should consider artwork that is proportional or can be enlarged to fit five-foot-high by ten-foot-wide panels. A selection panel will identify two to six images per artist for up to eight artists for digital reproduction onto temporary exterior grade panels. The Office will contract with a photographer to create the digital files to be used to produce the panels. The artist fee will vary depending on the number of artworks selected. We encourage applications from artists who work with colorful imagery, create works in series, and/or whose work demonstrates a unified vision or aesthetic. The panels need to be visually dynamic to an audience from three feet to 100 feet away.

This opportunity is open to emerging professional artists living within 100 miles of Seattle. An emerging artist is considered to be an artist in the early stage of his or her career (five years or less). Up to eight artists will each receive between $1,000 to $3,000 honorarium depending on the number of images selected. In exchange for this honorarium, the artist will be required to deliver his or her artwork to the photographer and pick up said artwork after being photographed. Installation of the artwork panels will occur in late summer or early fall 2011. Artists who apply will be notified of the selection panel's decision by late July 2011. Submit 8-20 images of existing two-dimensional artwork. Contact Deborah Paine at [email protected] or (206) 684-7132, or Marcia Iwasaki at [email protected] or (206) 233-3946.
