About This Call
Glow 2013 seeks artist proposals for an all-night public art event in Santa Monica. Artwork may vary in medium, including performance and video installations, and should be conceived specifically for the event. Artists are particularly encouraged to submit proposals that invite audiences to actively participate and interact with the artwork. The team is seeking at least one project that creates an interface between Glow's website and its audience, incorporating website data into a physical installation.
The vast majority of Glow project sites are outdoors, with the beach north and south of the Santa Monica Pier being the largest space. Additional sites include Palisades Park from the Pier to Santa Monica Blvd and Crescent Bay Park south of the Pier. A classroom space at the Senior Citizen center on Palisades Park is also available for one project. The Santa Monica Pier is not available as a location. The City of Santa Monica will provide electrical connections at all sites. An orientation meeting will be held on January 2, 2013, with additional site information provided.
Selected artists must be available to set up artwork on Friday, September 27; be present for the duration of Glow from 7 PM on September 28 to 3 AM on September 29; and disassemble and remove all artwork by the afternoon of September 29. All artists will receive recognition in the Glow brochure and website. Funding will range from $2,500 to $5,000, depending upon the nature and quality of the proposed installation. Any costs above allocated funds are the responsibility of the artist. All materials must be environmentally safe.
Proposals must include: 8 images of completed work with title, date, dimensions, media, and location; up to two sketches or site photographs; a detailed project description including dimensions, fabrication, installation, removal, and site-restoration strategy; a detailed materials and equipment list; a proposed budget covering all costs; a detailed timeline; and current resumes for each team member (maximum two pages each). An annotated list of images corresponding to submitted work is also required. Submittal materials will not be returned. Submission deadline is February 22, 2013 at 11:59 PM MST via CaFÉ. Selected artists will be announced no later than March 20, 2013.
