About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an iconic artwork for the Old Town Newhall Roundabout, located in Santa Clarita's Old Town Newhall community. The artwork will be visible to motorists traveling on Main Street in Old Town Newhall and Newhall Avenue. The space available is 40 feet long and 30 feet wide with no height restriction, though a minimum height of 6 feet is required. The piece will be positioned 60 or more feet from pedestrians and will not be directly accessible. Water and power are available at the site. Materials should not be reflective or distracting to motorists.
The artwork must be iconic and portray, address, or celebrate the history or heritage of Newhall. Thematic components should incorporate one or more of the following: Western films, Vaqueros (Spanish & Mexican Era), the oil industry, agriculture, gold mining, transportation, geography, natural history, and local Native American culture.
The selection process includes multiple phases: semi-finalists will be selected by April 11, 2013, and will receive a $500 stipend upon completion of conceptual design proposals due June 14, 2013. Two finalists will be selected by July 11, 2013, followed by community voting from July 15 to August 12, 2013. The final artist will be approved by City Council on October 8, 2013, with installation planned for Spring 2014. Applicants must submit 3 images through the application platform.
