About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking artists to create an outdoor artwork for the Newhall Ranch Road median, located near the entry to the City from the west, adjacent to Vanderbilt Way. This is the second median art project following the success of a previous installation on Bouquet Canyon Road.
The artwork should feature a contemporary industrial theme and may consider the history and growth of various industries in the Santa Clarita Valley including aerospace, biomedical, agriculture, and oil. Artists are encouraged to use all types of materials including stone, metal, wood, and found items. The piece must be original and site-specific, fabricated in durable, low-maintenance materials that will withstand Santa Clarita's climate, complementary to the surrounding area, and have strong public appeal.
The project budget is $15,000.00, which must cover all associated costs including design, fabrication, materials, labor, transportation, insurance, consulting fees, installation, permit fees, per diem, and taxes. The project is open to all artists age 18 and over. The selection process includes an initial submission deadline of April 10, 2013, followed by selection of 3 artists for the proposal phase (each receiving a $200 stipend). Selected finalists must present detailed conceptual design proposals in June 2013, including to-scale renderings, material descriptions, timeline, budget, and narrative. The winning artist(s) will be selected in June 2013, with installation targeted for October 2013. Submit a letter of interest, current resume, and three examples of your work through Café by April 10, 2013. For questions, contact Jeff Barber at (661) 250-3779 or [email protected].
