About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an artist or team of artists to design and construct a community entry art piece along Magic Mountain Parkway at the exit from Interstate 5 (North). The artwork will be situated on a large wall at the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and the off ramp, welcoming visitors and creating a landmark entrance to the city. Motorists exiting the 5 Freeway at Magic Mountain Parkway northbound and those traveling eastbound on Magic Mountain Parkway will be greeted by this art piece.
The cement wall is 34 feet wide and 36 feet tall, with usable space for the art piece of 34 feet wide and 15 feet tall. The artwork can be created using various methods and materials including sandblasting, etching, tile work, stone, metalwork, grating, and paint. The artwork must be original and site-specific, fabricated in durable, low-maintenance materials that will withstand Santa Clarita's heat and elements, complementary to the park and surrounding area, and must not cause driver distractions or confusion. Installation must be completed no later than October 31, 2013.
The project budget is $15,000 and must cover all associated costs including design, fabrication, materials, labor, transportation, insurance, consulting fees, installation, permit fees, per diem, and taxes. The artist is responsible for purchasing all art materials. Three finalist artists will each receive a $500 stipend for the proposal phase. Applicants should submit a letter of interest, current resume, and three examples of their work through www.callforentry.org by July 12, 2013. For questions, contact Jeff Barber at [email protected] or (661) 250-3779.
