About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita invites artists to submit portfolios for consideration in creating site-specific artwork for the new Sheriff Station located at 26201 Golden Valley Rd, Santa Clarita, CA 91350. The artwork will be installed in the upper lobby walls and ceiling, with pieces hanging no lower than 8 feet above the lobby floor.
Design Guidelines: Artwork should be inspired by the site, its history, and the community. Original designs of any medium are encouraged, with emphasis on creativity, timeliness, and innovation. Artwork must be suitable for viewing by all ages and may not be used for advertisement or promotion. Designs must not include intellectual property breaches, trademarks, brands, or images of drugs. Artists should consider structural soundness, resistance to theft and vandalism, and maintenance costs. A maintenance schedule must be outlined in the proposal.
Project Guidelines: Artwork must be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal or damage and must comply with standard engineering practices and ADA standards. The City will review proposed installation plans and may request information from a California-licensed engineer. A plaque indicating the artist's name and artwork title will be provided.
Up to five semifinalists will be invited to develop site-specific proposals and receive a $1,000 honorarium. The selected finalist will receive a total budget of $190,623 and is responsible for design, fabrication, installation, transportation, and delivery. The artist must provide a maintenance guide and obtain insurance coverage for the installation period. Evaluation criteria include site-specificity, visual impact, interpretation and creativity, composition and design, craftsmanship, and clarity of artistic vision.
Eligibility: Artists 18 years or older may submit individual or collaborative applications. A US mailing address and completed W-9 are required. Application materials include a resume or CV, up to ten images of previous artwork (with at least one existing public artwork example), and an artist statement.
