About This Call
San Jose Public Art and ZER01 invite artists to submit qualifications and letters of interest to install temporary artworks on the San Fernando Street corridor in Downtown San Jose. These artworks will be installed in June 2010, featured as part of the 3rd 01SJ Biennial (September 15-19, 2010), and displayed through October 2010.
San Fernando Street is a significant east/west corridor through downtown San Jose connecting Diridon Station, the sports, retail and cultural district, and San Jose State University. The street offers opportunities for artworks in various media including static, electronic, sound, projection, light-based, interactive and mobile or networked works. Six potential sites are available for temporary art installations with budgets ranging from $10,000 to $50,000: the Greenway in front of Diridon Station (up to $15,000); San Fernando Light Rail Station (up to $10,000); Highway 87 Underpass/Guadalupe River overlook (up to $50,000); Hwy 87 to Market Street (up to $10,000); façade on Northeast Corner of San Fernando St. and Almaden Blvd. (up to $15,000); and Market Street to First Street (up to $15,000).
U.S. residents or those with a US Social Security or Tax Identification Number by the application deadline are eligible to apply. Selection criteria include aesthetic merit of past projects, appropriateness of work to project goals and setting, and experience with temporary artworks in public settings. The selection process occurs in phases: qualifications and letters of interest are reviewed October 16, 2009; finalists are notified October 21, 2009 and invited to visit sites; conceptual proposals are due December 4, 2009; final selections are made December 11, 2009 with artist commissions awarded December 15, 2009. Artist contracts will be issued in January 2010. Applicants must be willing to enter into the City of San Jose's design and fabrication agreements as written. Applications require 10 images and must be submitted online via CaFÉ by 11:59 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time on October 8, 2009. There is no application fee.
