About This Call

The City of San Jose is seeking experienced artists or artist teams to submit Statements of Qualifications for a Pre-Qualified Public Artist Roster. The Roster will serve as a resource for future public art selection panels, streamlining the artist selection process for upcoming public art projects associated with the construction of new civic buildings and facilities, parks, environmental services, transportation, and streetscape improvement projects throughout San José. Some projects may offer opportunities for artists to work as part of a design team with the project architect/designer.

Artists chosen for inclusion in the Roster will be eligible to be considered for future public art projects in San José for a five-year period. The Roster will include site-responsive visual artists specializing in: architecturally integrated work designed as part of civic infrastructure (terrazzo, tile, glass, light, furniture, landscaping, etc.), including design team and master planning collaborations; environmental work considering nature, natural phenomena, ecosystems, and environmental or social and political issues; and sculpture including bas-relief, 3-D, mechanical, and kinetic work. This call is not for artists who are primarily muralists. The Public Art Program has a separate roster for muralists.

Budgets for upcoming permanent public art projects are expected to range from $15,000 to $320,000. Project budgets will vary on a case-by-case basis. Project funding will cover all expenses related to research, community engagement, investigation, design, fabrication, and installation of the artwork, including design time and fees, design documents, renderings, structural engineering and construction drawings, fabrication, transportation, installation, and insurance. An Artist Selection Panel will review all eligible submissions based on aesthetic and technical excellence of past projects, unique perspective and innovative methods, professional experience, experience with community engagement, experience with appropriate materials and methods for public environments, demonstrated ability to execute concepts, and demonstrated ability to manage projects on time and on budget. Inclusion in the Roster does not guarantee a commission. Work sample requirements: 5-8 images and 0-2 videos (5-10 total samples).
