About This Call
The City of San Jose is seeking artists for multiple public art projects with budgets ranging from approximately $25,000 to $250,000. Specific projects include: Fire Station 36 ($115,000, exterior); Starbird Park ($120,000, exterior with possible community residency); Edenvale CC ($150,000, site integrated work); Trails projects ($20,000-$150,000, exterior cohesive work); Calabasas Branch Library ($86,000, site integrated, exterior or interior); VTA Light Rail stations ($50,000-$175,000, exterior); and BART stations (large site-integrated commissions up to $250,000, small site-integrated commissions up to $75,000).
Project budgets include all expenses related to research, design, fabrication, and installation of artwork, including engineering, construction documentation, fabrication, transportation, installation, artist accommodations, insurance, and other project-related expenses. A 10% contingency is designated for unforeseen conditions, with any remaining contingency reverting to the City.
Artists who are U.S. residents or have a U.S. Social Security or Tax Identification Number by the application deadline are eligible to apply. Selection criteria include aesthetic merit of past projects, appropriateness of artwork medium and artistic concepts as they relate to project goals and setting, and experience or demonstrated interest in creating public artworks in collaboration with architects, design teams, and community members. Demonstrated experience in public art is required unless applying as an emerging public artist. A panel of artists and arts professionals will review applications, with final selections approved by the San José Arts Commission. Applicants must submit 15 images.
