About This Call
The City of San Jose Public Art Program seeks to commission site-specific artworks in several different locations throughout San Jose. Some projects are community-focused and others will be integrated into Capital Improvement Projects. Artists can be considered for more than one project but will not be commissioned for simultaneous projects with the City of San Jose.
Projects include: Southeast Branch Library (budget $85,000, Council District 8, potential Evergreen Village Square location); Fire Station 37 (estimated budget $100,000, Willow Glen neighborhood, Lincoln Avenue); Starbird Youth Center (budget $35,000, Starbird Park, Williams Rd @ Boynton Ave., 95117); Japantown Neighborhood Project (budget $50,000, focusing on historic and cultural themes); Hoffman/Via Monte Community Center (design phase $25,000, northwest corner of Gallup Drive and Mesa Drive); and Alum Rock Cultural Commemoration Artwork (estimated $25,000-$30,000, in proximity to Mexican Heritage Plaza at Alum Rock and King Roads, 95116).
Artist eligibility is open to those who live and/or work in Alameda, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, Solano, and Monterey counties. Artists must be eligible to work in the United States and have a valid U.S. Social Security or Tax Identification Number by the application deadline. Artists currently under contract with the City of San Jose Public Art Program are not eligible. Selection criteria include aesthetic merit of past projects, appropriateness of work to project goals and setting, experience in public art settings, and demonstrated experience in collaborative situations. A panel of arts professionals will review applications and create qualified artist pools by February 17, 2010. Final artist selection will occur between February 17 and April 1, 2010. All selected artists must be willing to enter into the City of San Jose's combined design and fabrication agreement as written.
