About This Call

The City of San Jose Public Art Program is creating a Roster of Pre-Qualified Artists to streamline the artist selection process for upcoming mural projects. Artists chosen for inclusion in the Roster will be eligible to be considered for future public art mural projects in San Jose. Inclusion in the final Roster will be for a period of three years.

The Roster will include artists who work in two-dimensional artwork media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital media, and graphic design. Possible mural project locations may include outdoor and indoor sites with surfaces such as concrete, plaster, wood, asphalt, vinyl or poly-vinyl mesh, and other materials, or digitally-projected images. Some projects may be on sites under jurisdiction of the State of California's Department of Transportation (CalTrans), which may require compliance with CalTrans permitting, review, and design approval requirements.

Eligibility is open only to artists or artist teams who reside and do their artistic work in Santa Clara, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, or Contra Costa counties in California. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal. The anticipated budget range for upcoming mural projects is $2,000 - $75,000, with budgets varying on a case-by-case basis. Project budgets must include all costs for artist fees, design, community engagement, equipment, materials, production, installation, transportation, permits, taxes, and insurance as required. Artists in the Roster will be considered for mural projects and will not have to submit for individual projects during the three-year period, though inclusion does not guarantee a commission. Artists may be individually contacted regarding specific projects or invited to submit proposals through project-based selection committees. All final designs must be approved by the City of San José's Public Art Committee. There is no fee for submitting. Submittal deadline is Monday, July 31, 2017, 11:59 PM Mountain Daylight Time. Roster selection completion is anticipated for September 2017. Work samples must include a minimum of 6 and maximum of 8 images.
