About This Call
The City of San Jose Public Art Program is building a Roster of Pre-Qualified Mural Artists to streamline the artist selection process for upcoming mural projects. Artists selected for inclusion in the Roster will be eligible to be considered for future public art mural projects in San José. Inclusion in the final Roster will be for a period of five years.
The Roster will include artists who work in two-dimensional artwork media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital media, and graphic design. Possible mural project locations may include outdoor and indoor sites with surfaces such as concrete, plaster, wood, asphalt, vinyl or poly-vinyl mesh, and other materials, and may also include digitally-projected images. The anticipated budget range for upcoming mural projects is $2,000 - $320,000, varying on a case-by-case basis. Project budgets must include all costs for artist fees, design, community engagement, equipment, materials, production and installation, site preparation, anti-graffiti treatment, transportation, permits, taxes, licenses, bonds and insurance.
Artists in the Roster will be considered for mural projects that arise during the five-year period and will not have to submit for individual mural projects during this time. Inclusion in the Roster does not guarantee a commission. Artists may be individually contacted regarding specific projects or invited to submit proposals through project-based selection committees. All final designs must be approved by the City of San José's Public Art Committee. Artists included in the Roster may update their work samples during the duration of the Roster. Submissions must include 4-8 work samples and be submitted through CaFÉ. There is no fee for submitting. Selection will be based on aesthetic excellence of past projects, experience with community engagement, experience with materials and methods appropriate to public murals, and demonstrated ability to manage projects on time and on budget.
