About This Call

The City of San Jose's Public Art Program and Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department are seeking an artist to create public art for Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park (LCRSP). At 68,000 square feet, LCRSP is the largest skate park in California, featuring the world's largest cradle, tallest vert wall, and largest full pipe. The park is located on top of a knoll in Lake Cunningham Regional Park and is difficult to identify from surrounding roads and parking areas.

Artists are asked to submit qualifications for the design, fabrication, and installation of a public art project that will create a visual identity for the skate park and help bring attention to this internationally recognized facility. The selected artist will be asked to convey the energy and community of LCRSP. Demonstrated experience designing artwork for skate/BMX/surf culture is highly valued. Artists working in all mediums will be considered, but the artwork must be able to withstand outdoor conditions with minimal maintenance. There is a significant opportunity for 3-dimensional artwork on the approach from the Park Road parking lot to the skate park, and the developed artwork may be used as an iconic image for branding on signage.

The project budget is $80,000, which includes all expenses related to research, design, fabrication, installation, design time, consultants, engineering, construction documentation, transportation, accommodations, insurance, and all other project-related expenses. A 10% contingency on the construction budget is designated for unforeseen conditions. This opportunity is open to artists working or living in California. Applicants must have all necessary permits to work in the United States at the time of submission. Artists currently under contract with the City of San José Public Art Program are not eligible unless their current project will be complete by September 2011. The application deadline is August 3, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Submissions must include an Artist Statement of Interest (3000 character maximum), resume with 2 references (3000 character maximum), up to 8 images of completed projects, and descriptions of past work with title, date, location, dimensions, materials, and budget if a public commission.
