City of San Jose Fire Department Training Center and Emergency Operations Center Public Art Commission

The City of San Jose is seeking an artist or artist team to create a public art treatment for the exterior of a new joint facility housing the Fire Department Training Center and Emergency Operations Center. The art enhancement must be either 2-dimensional or bas-relief, and may include laser or water jet cut metal panels, modular aluminum façade panels, textured architectural foam, low-relief 3-dimensional wall panels made of lightweight composite materials, lightweight foam cladding, or lightweight fiber cement façade materials. No painted murals are permitted. The artist will be expected to deliver a custom design using materials with superior external longevity. The project budget is up to $300,000, allocated as follows: $45,000 for design completion through construction documentation prepared by a licensed engineer, and up to $255,000 for fabrication and installation, which includes a mandatory 10% contingency holdback.

This opportunity is open only to visual artists or artist teams who maintain either a residential or studio address within one of the following Bay Area counties: Santa Clara, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, or Solano. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal. The artist is responsible for design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of the artwork within the given project budget and is expected to attend all meetings necessary for design and successful completion of the project, including meetings with stakeholders, City departments, and the Public Art Committee for approval of concept and final design.

Applications must be submitted online via CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org) by April 14, 2021 at 10:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Submissions must include 8 digital images representing previously completed projects; no more than 3 may be renderings of artworks not yet completed. The selected artist will be required to enter into a Design/Build agreement with the City. Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2021 and be fully completed by December 2022.
