About This Call
The City of San Jose's Office of Cultural Affairs and Environmental Services Department (ESD) seeks a photographer-in-residence to document the people, places, and operations of the Environmental Services Department, including Storm Water, Water Pollution Control, and Water Recycling Services. The photographer will work approximately 20 hours per week over a six-month residency period and will be provided with a work station at the Water Pollution Control Plant. At the end of the residency, the photographer will create a proposal for presenting the photographs (such as framed photographs, web pages, or a publication) and a separate production contract will be negotiated.
The residency budget is $30,000, which covers all expenses during the residency period. Following the residency, the Office of Cultural Affairs will negotiate a separate contract up to $20,000 for the presentation of the photographs in a suitable form. Photographers must be residents of one of the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, or Sonoma. Applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of application.
Artist selection is a two-phase process. A panel of photography professionals and Environmental Services Department representatives will review applications. Three finalists will be interviewed on June 25, 2009, either in person or via telephone. The Public Art Committee of the San Jose Arts Commission will review the panel's recommendation on July 21, 2009. Submissions must be received as a complete application by midnight Mountain Daylight Time on Friday, June 5, 2009. Applications require 10 images and are submitted online via CaFÉ. There is no application fee.
