About This Call
The City of San Jose's Public Art Program and Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department are seeking an artist to create public art for the Coleman Soccer Fields, part of a new regional complex located near the proposed San Jose Earthquakes professional soccer stadium. Artists should submit qualifications for the development and implementation of an integrated design concept for the fence and/or gateway entrance. The fence and entry area will have the most potential to significantly impact the image of the complex, and artists demonstrating past work with potential for integration into perimeter infrastructure will be most competitive.
The municipal soccer field project will include 4 soccer fields, a multipurpose building (concessions/office/restroom/storage), a covered picnic area, and parking area, all enclosed with a tubular steel fence with gate access. The facility will be located at the terminus of Aviation Avenue, west of Coleman Avenue, and will serve local and regional soccer teams and leagues with a total capacity of 240 (players and spectators). The selected artist will initiate design development prior to the selection of the design-build contractor to allow for integration of artwork into final construction documents as necessary. The project is on a fast track design-build schedule with contractor award expected in early September 2011 and field completion scheduled for early February 2013.
The project budget is $130,000, which includes all expenses related to research, design, fabrication, and installation of the artwork including design time, consultants, engineering, construction documentation, fabrication, transportation, installation, artist accommodations, insurance, and all other project-related expenses. A 10% contingency on the construction budget is designated for unforeseen conditions. This opportunity is open to artists working or living in California. Applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submission. Artists currently under contract for an art project with the City of San Jose Public Art Program are not eligible unless their current project will be complete by July 2011. Selection will be made by a Public Art Core Team including stakeholders, client department representatives, and visual arts professionals based on aesthetic excellence, experience with public art collaboration and community outreach, experience developing outdoor artworks, and experience with construction materials and methods appropriate to the project scope.
