About This Call
The City of San Bruno is seeking professional artists and artist teams over the age of 18 to create a public art project celebrating the city's past, present, and future aspirations. The project will reflect San Bruno's unique physical, cultural, and historical elements while enhancing civic pride and the beauty of city surroundings.
The approved site is located along Sneath Lane between Quail Point Circle and the western intersection of Claremont Drive, consisting of four retaining walls with varying dimensions: Wall 1 (142' long, 7' high), Wall 2 (265' long, 10' high), Wall 3 (170' long, 5' high), and Wall 4 (110' long, 3.5' high). Artists may use one or more walls in their design. The site features partial views of San Francisco Bay and Sweeney Ridge, with a marked bike lane along Sneath Lane. The project should take driver, cyclist, and pedestrian safety into consideration and utilize graffiti-proof finishes. An estimated artwork budget of up to $75,000 has been established, inclusive of artist fees and all costs associated with design, fabrication, transport, and installation.
Submittal requirements include an artist statement, professional résumé for each team member, three references from completed projects, and up to 10 images of previous work on CD or USB drive with an annotated image index. Artists will be selected for interviews by the Culture and Arts Commission based on artistic excellence, demonstrated ability to convey meaning and address the site's context, and ability to work with appropriate, durable materials. Up to three selected artists will be asked to produce a rendering and will be compensated up to $1,000. An optional site visit is scheduled for September 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at San Bruno City Hall, 567 El Camino Real. For questions, contact John Alita at [email protected] or 650.616.7017.
