About This Call

The Public Art Program of Richmond, California invites visual artists to submit qualifications for the commissioning of an outdoor sculpture at Sheridan Point, located along the Port of Richmond waterfront. The sculpture will be located between the historic Ford Building and the west end of the Marina at the former ferry landing.

Eligibility is open only to artists residing in California, Oregon, or Washington who have successfully completed at least two permanent sculptures commissioned for an outdoor environment, preferably similar in scope and nature to this project. Artists must demonstrate aesthetic excellence in design and execution of completed projects and ability to install or oversee installation according to the project timeline. Submission deadline is Friday, August 30, 2013 at midnight MDT.

The art site is an unpaved section of land at Sheridan Point measuring approximately 33' x 65', located at the end of Harbour Way South on the west point of Marina Bay. The site overlooks Richmond's Inner Harbor with panoramic waterfront views of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, Oakland, and Berkeley. The sculpture must be made of durable materials suitable to the marine location and appropriate for a site with constant public access. Project goals include reflecting Richmond's progressive vision for social, cultural, economic and environmental growth; stimulating public interest in and enjoyment of the waterfront; using light, wind or other natural phenomena to create a place-based artwork; commissioning a sophisticated and modern artwork that complements Marina activities; and adding variety to the City's existing public art collection. The project budget is $175,000 and includes all costs related to the artist's project management fees, artwork design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, installation costs including footings and anchoring systems, subcontractor and consultant fees, permit and license fees, and site preparation.
