About This Call

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is seeking original designs by local artists to cover four utility boxes (traffic signal cabinets) as part of the Utility Box Beautification Program. The program aims to transform these metal cabinets into works of art, creating vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive public spaces throughout the city.

Artists must be 18 years or older and preferably reside, work, or attend school in the Inland Empire region. Original artwork can be created in any 2D medium. Selected artists will receive a $750.00 stipend per design; the City covers installation and maintenance costs. Artists may submit up to two design proposals. Final designs must be converted to PDF, .ai, .psd, TIFF, or JPEG format (TIFF and JPEG minimum 150 DPI and 2,000 pixels). All designs will be printed on anti-graffiti vinyl and installed by a third-party vendor.

Applications must include an Artist Statement of Interest (750 words maximum) describing the applicant's connection to Rancho Cucamonga or the Inland Empire and their experience with public art, plus a Design Concept and Statement for each proposal. Designs should be bright, bold, and visible from a distance. Artwork must be original and may relate to themes including topography, native nature, Rancho Cucamonga's history, or community unity. Designs must not contain political statements, religious references, copyrighted material, corporate branding, offensive imagery, traffic signal representations, or intellectual property violations. Selected artists will be notified by January 18, 2024, and must be available for up to three meetings in January and February to finalize designs. The City retains ownership of installed artwork and reserves the right to adjust, remove, or replace it as necessary. Artists retain copyright of their original work.
