About This Call

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is issuing a Request for Qualifications from artists or artist teams to design and install mini mural projects on select cement directional markers along the Pacific Electric Trail in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. The mini murals will be located at key intersections along the trail and visible to vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. Project goals include enhancing the route's aesthetic appeal, promoting local artists, and providing a surprise and delight opportunity for community members.

The Pacific Electric Trail is a free public access trail spanning 21 miles from Claremont to Rialto, with approximately 8 miles in Rancho Cucamonga. The trail was developed as a Rails-to-Trails project and serves as a vital recreation corridor. The Mini Mural Project scope includes designing and painting two sides of directional markers measuring approximately 18" wide and 36" tall, plus the top measuring about 20" by 20". The project will cover five intersection locations with two markers at each intersection: Pacific Electric Trail @ Hellman Avenue, Base Line Road, Hermosa Avenue, Haven Avenue, and Kenyon Way.

Artists must be 18 years or older and professional artists. Preference will be given to artists who reside in the Inland Empire region. Artists will be awarded a $1,000.00 stipend per directional marker, inclusive of all design fees, supplies, fabrication, and time. The stipend will be distributed in two payments: $300 for completion of the artwork design concept and $700 upon completed installation. Application requirements include an Artist Statement of Interest (750 words maximum), Professional Resume and three Professional References (1,500 words maximum), and up to 10 digital images of recent previous work created within the past 10 years. Each image should include title, year, media, location, project budget, dimensions, commissioning agency, and collaborators or design professionals if applicable. Application deadline is 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 22, 2023, or until 100 applications have been received. Selected finalists will be notified November 20-23, with concept development and review from November 27 through January 15, and projects installed in February 2024.
