City of Rancho Cucamonga 2025 Utility Box Beautification Program

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is seeking original designs by local artists to cover four utility boxes (traffic signal cabinets) as part of the Utility Box Beautification Program. The program aims to transform these metal cabinets into works of art, creating vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive public spaces throughout the city.

Artists must be 18 years or older and reside in the Inland Empire region. Both professional artists and students are welcome to apply, including those new to public art. Artwork can be created in any 2D medium and must be submitted as JPEG or PDF files initially. If selected, final designs must be converted to PDF, .ai, .psd, TIFF, or JPEG format (TIFF and JPEG minimum 150 DPI and 2,000 pixels). Artists can submit up to two design proposals. Selected artists will receive a $750.00 stipend per design chosen; the City covers installation and maintenance costs. Artists retain copyright of their work.

Designs should be bright, bold, and visible from a distance. Artwork must be original and may relate to themes including topography, native nature, Rancho Cucamonga's history, or community unity. Designs cannot contain political statements, religious references, copyrighted material, corporate branding, offensive imagery, traffic signals, or representations of illegal activity. Selected artists must be available for up to three meetings in February and March to finalize designs with the City and vendor. Installation is scheduled for April/May 2025. Applications are due February 2, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. PDT or until 100 applications are received. Artists will be notified of selection by February 20, 2025.
