About This Call

The City of Raleigh Arts Commission invites United States citizens residing in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. to submit qualifications to provide site-specific public art for Raleigh's Halifax Park Community Center. The project budget is $79,952 inclusive of all expenses including design, fabrication, installation, travel, taxes, permits and fees. There is no application fee.

The Halifax Park Community Center, located at 1023 Halifax Street in Raleigh, is a new 17,000 square-foot facility designed by Clark-Nexsen that will include a gymnasium, reception lobby, dividable meeting/classroom, weight room, warming kitchen, and support spaces. The facility will attain LEED Silver Certification and is situated within a four-acre park that will include a new playground, outdoor basketball court, multipurpose field, and parking. Public art opportunities include the entry plaza between Halifax Street and on-site parking, the sidewalk along Halifax facing east, the east or southeast façade of the building, and interior spaces. Possible themes include the history, heritage, and promise of the neighborhood, and the intersection within the facility of people of different ages and abilities.

The selection process has two stages. The Artist Selection Panel will first evaluate qualifications based on artistic merit, placemaking experience, experience in collaborative public art processes, project management experience, and technical expertise. Up to three finalists will be invited to Raleigh for interviews and will receive a stipend to cover travel and related expenses. The Artist Selection Panel will choose the artist and forward the recommendation to the Public Art and Design Board for approval. Applications must be submitted via CaFÉ by 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, June 3, 2011, and must include a statement of interest (3,000 characters maximum), one-to-two page résumé, ten digital images of previously completed artworks, an image identification list, and contact information for three references. For questions, contact Kim Curry-Evans at (919) 996-4688 or [email protected].
