About This Call

The City of Raleigh invites United States citizen artists to submit qualifications to provide site-specific public art for the new Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center. The project budget is $70,000 inclusive of all expenses including design, fabrication, installation, travel, taxes, permits and fees. There is no fee to submit qualifications.

The Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center is being developed as part of the Buffaloe Road Athletic Park at 5900 Buffaloe Road, Raleigh, NC. The new recreational swimming facility will be located within a 167-acre park that includes athletic fields, hiking trails, wetlands, and a future connection to a greenway along the Neuse River. The facility will include a leisure pool with water slide, zero-depth entry, concession area, locker rooms, and support spaces, and will attain LEED Silver Certification. Public art opportunities include the landscape/streetscape entry, the exterior patio with a 1,500 gallon rainwater cistern, and the interior wall of the pool area (approximately 108 feet in length and 13 feet in height with ten vertical windows). Possible themes include water in its different forms, water stewardship and conservation, water and healthy lifestyles, and the intersection of people of different ages and abilities.

The selection process has two stages. The Artist Selection Panel will evaluate qualifications based on artistic merit, placemaking experience, collaborative public art experience, project management experience, and technical expertise. Up to three finalists will be invited to Raleigh for interviews and will receive a $500 stipend to cover travel expenses. Finalists will be notified April 28, 2010, interviewed in late May 2010, and the project will be awarded in June 2010. Applications must include a statement of interest (3,000 characters maximum), one-to-two page resume, ten digital images of previously completed artworks, an image identification list (750 characters per image maximum), and contact information for three references. For questions, contact Jerry Bolas at 919.831.2414 or [email protected].
