About This Call
The City of Raleigh Arts Commission, in partnership with Artspace and Visual Art Exchange, invites U.S. citizens and artist-teams who have resided in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, or Washington, D.C. for at least one year to submit work for a temporary one-year exhibition on Raleigh's downtown City Plaza. Artists must be 18 years of age or older and should have experience installing and exhibiting art in outdoor public venues. Current Art on City Plaza recipients are not eligible. Work must be available for the entire exhibition period (September 2011 – September 2012) and available for installation September 6–9, 2011. Only one work per artist will be selected.
The artworks will be installed on one of three concrete pedestals: two pedestals on the north entryway measuring 5' x 8' and one pedestal on the southeast measuring 10' x 10'. All pedestals have a weight-bearing capacity of 4,000 pounds. Work may be of any media, with particular interest in sculptures incorporating new media or kinetic activity. Work must be suitable for public display, able to withstand adverse weather conditions including high winds and snow, appropriate for an active pedestrian environment, and able to be structurally secured using anchor bolts. Maintenance, safety, use of non-hazardous materials, and durability are essential. Proposals for unbuilt work will not be accepted.
Each selected artist or artist-team will receive a $2,000 honorarium and an additional stipend for delivery and return expenses. Applications must be submitted via CaFÉ by 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 27, 2011. There is no application fee. Applicants must submit a statement of interest (up to 2,000 characters), a one-to-two page résumé, up to seven digital images (two views of each work submitted plus up to three images of previous works), artwork specifications and information for each piece, and contact information for three references. For questions, contact Kim Curry-Evans, Public Art Coordinator, at (919) 996-4688 or [email protected].
