About This Call
The City of Orlando is seeking a freestanding sculpture or feature for Orlando Fire Station #9, located at 3856 Center Loop Road, Orlando, Florida. A total of $37,000 has been approved for artwork as part of the 1% budget for new construction. This budget is inclusive of all related expenses including artist honoraria, permitting, fabrication, foundation, lighting, and installation. The artist honoraria is $3,700, with $33,300 allocated for project costs. The selected artist is responsible for collecting and delivering the artwork to the project site and managing installation.
The artwork must be permanent and durable with minimal maintenance needs. Given Orlando's subtropical climate with hot, humid conditions, intense sun, seasonal heavy rains, and hurricane-force winds, materials must be selected to resist fading, rust, and weather damage while meeting applicable building codes. The Public Art Selection Panel will evaluate submissions based on artistic excellence, professional experience, durability, safety, and site compatibility. This opportunity is open to professional artists working in three-dimensional media with a proven track record in large-scale outdoor public art and demonstrated experience meeting budget and time schedules. Consideration will only be given to professional artists whose work has been or is currently on display in a public setting.
Three finalists will be selected to provide site-specific proposals and will each receive a $500 stipend. Final artist selection will follow proposal review. The selected artist must complete the project, including installation, by June 29, 2020. Work sample requirements: 1-10 images, 0-1 audio file, 0-1 video file, with a total of 1-12 samples.
