About This Call

The City of Orlando and its Community Redevelopment Agency seek an artist or artist team to create 3-dimensional artwork for a site located south of Colonial Drive, north of Concord Street, east of Garland Avenue and I-4, and west of the CSX railway corridor. The proposed artwork should capture the distinct character or culture of the community and/or visually enhance public spaces. The site is located by the recently developed Colonial Drive bicycle and pedestrian bridge, adjacent to a multi-modal transportation hub where large numbers of cars, bikes, trains, and pedestrians pass daily.

This call is open to professional artists working in three-dimensional media. The total budget is $350,000, which includes all artwork development, transportation, site preparation, installation, permits, inspections, and utility hook-up if necessary. An additional $50,000 has been set aside for maintenance and finalist stipends. Due to Orlando's subtropical climate with intense sun, seasonal heavy rains, and hurricane-force winds, the artwork must be permanent, durable, and require minimal maintenance. Materials must be sun and rust resistant, and the artwork must comply with Florida Building Code and City Code standards. The artwork should not include theme park representation, logos, sports team representation, business representation, references to Pulse Nightclub or COVID-19, identifiable persons or celebrities, copyrighted materials, more than 5% text, or political messages. Sustainable solar lighting is desirable; water and electronic sound treatments are not allowed. The artwork must not have elements that are hazardous, unsafe, or distracting to area users.

Submissions must be received by August 27, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MDT through the CAFÉ online service at www.callforentry.org. There is no charge to register or submit. Artists should submit 3-6 images of their work. Submissions will be evaluated based on project approach and artist's experience, including aesthetic and expertise in 3D media and public art projects. One or more finalists will be selected and paid a stipend of at least $3,000 to further develop their proposals. The artwork must be fully completed and installed by May 28, 2021. For questions or accommodations, contact Mary-Stewart Droege at 407-246-3276.
