About This Call

The City of Napa seeks a lead artist or artist team to design a temporary window mural for a prominent, high-traffic location at 1201 Main Street and Pearl Street in downtown Napa. This Request for Proposals is open to California residents in Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Marin, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, and welcomes artists of all backgrounds and cultures. The City particularly encourages applications from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color artists, women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and other marginalized groups.

The mural will be a temporary 2D vinyl window installation covering window dimensions of 53 feet x 7 feet with variations on each panel. Artists must submit photo-based artwork as high-resolution digital files suitable for large-format printing in CMYK format (AI or PDF files). The work can be a painting, illustration, or photography, and artists may create new work or reformat existing work. There is no specific theme required. The City of Napa will be responsible for fabrication and installation of the vinyl media. Selected artwork must align with the City's Public Art Master Plan goals: creating an exciting and harmonious public environment, preserving and enriching Napa's cultural environment, enhancing downtown character, and stimulating the local economy.

The selected artist will receive a $2,000 stipend. Submission deadline is July 28, 2023. Complete submissions must include a letter of interest addressing the concept and design approach, 1-20 images of previous work and proposed artwork for the site, an image list with descriptions (up to 5 sentences each), and a resume. Artwork is ineligible if it contains copyrighted material, logos, brand names, addresses, or phone numbers; is plagiarized or copied; or is obscene, political, or harmful. The mural is subject to removal by the City or property owner at any time. For inquiries, contact Meredith Knudsen, City of Napa Public Art Coordinator, at [email protected].
