About This Call

The City of Napa seeks a qualified public artist or artist team to create and install a site-specific artwork in the Soscol Avenue medians between Gasser Drive and Sousa Lane. This is part of a multi-phase process to identify an experienced public artist specializing in site-specific sculpture.

The project aims to enhance Napa's image as a world-class art destination with site-specific, original artwork that is inviting, aesthetically appealing, and viewable as a drive-by experience. The artwork must be 50% transparent (measured perpendicular to the median or with frequent spacing between non-transparent elements) and not exceed 15 feet in height. There is no power to the site and no evening lighting. The budget is a not-to-exceed figure of $200,000, which includes all design and project management fees, fabrication, transportation, delivery, storage, installation, liability insurance, bonds, and a minimum 15% contingency.

Eligible applicants must be professional artists or teams with experience in designing, fabricating, and installing a minimum of two permanent, exterior public artworks of similar scale and complexity. Applicants must demonstrate professional achievement as an artist, experience managing complex projects with technical competence in fabrication and installation, and the ability to procure and direct subcontractors and consultants. The final artist will be required to obtain a City of Napa building permit with stamped engineering drawings, installation and lift plan, erosion sediment control plan, and traffic control plan, and must comply with prevailing wage requirements and Department of Industrial Relations standards. Submissions must include a letter of interest, 5-10 images, image list with descriptions (up to 5 sentences each), and a resume. Complete responses must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2023.
