About This Call
The City of Mountain View is seeking art designs for a glass curtain wall to be constructed at the Mountain View Public Library's main lobby. The library is located at 585 Franklin Street in downtown Mountain View. The renovation project expands the Children's Services space on the first floor and increases public seating areas on the second floor. A glass curtain wall with a double door and smaller "playful" doorway for children will separate the main lobby from the newly expanded Children's Services space.
The budget for art design is $5,000, with artwork creation budgeted at $25,000 or less. Art designs can be etched, frosted, or have material applied to create children-themed artwork appropriate for a wide and diverse audience. The tempered glass wall includes 2 full paneled sections (approximately 8 feet high by 6 feet long each), smaller paneled sections, a section with a child-height doorway, and a panel with full-size double doors. Designs should incorporate most glass wall panels while allowing patrons to look through the glass. No art is permitted on the adult full-size doorway. The design may incorporate the text "Children's Services" as part of wayfinding.
Applications must be submitted through the CaFE website between April 1st and April 30th, 2017, and include the artwork design, application process type, and approximate cost. Applicants must reside in California, Oregon, or Washington. The Visual Arts Committee will jury proposals in May 2017 and submit finalists to the architect and Public Works Department for review. A single finalist will be chosen when the City Council approves construction funding. The City does not guarantee a contract with the selected artist and may change the location and art medium if funding is delayed.
