About This Call
The City of Mountain View is seeking proposals for public art to be commissioned for the Mountain View Community Center remodel project. The Community Center, located at 201 South Rengstorff Avenue, is undergoing renovation and expansion. Originally constructed in 1964, the project includes a new social hall and lobby, enhanced main building entrance, remodeled preschool and program rooms, and new public meeting facilities. The building will be designed to meet LEED-Green Building standards and include solar photovoltaics.
The total budget for public art is $140,000 (1 percent of the estimated $14 million construction budget), including art design, delivery, installation, and a potential stipend. Four art pieces will be commissioned for four specific locations: one exterior location (budget $40,000-$60,000) and three interior locations (combined budget not to exceed $75,000). All art pieces shall be wall-mounted and can be either two-dimensional or three-dimensional. The artwork should be appropriate civic or public art suitable for display to a wide and diverse audience with meaning relative to its setting and the Mountain View community. Materials must be resistant to theft, vandalism, and weathering. A stipend of up to $5,000 may be provided to support artist presentations and maquette development.
Proposals must be submitted electronically through the CaFE (Call for Entry) website by May 31, 2016. Submissions should include a one-page resumé, a list of site numbers being applied for with proposed artwork costs, and ten photos of past or current work (each including title, dimensions, media type, and date). Artists residing in California, Oregon, and Washington are encouraged to apply. Artists may apply individually or as a team and can apply for one or all four site locations. The Visual Arts Committee will review and jury proposals, with selected artists potentially presenting maquettes and drawings to the City Council for final selection. For questions, contact [email protected].
