About This Call

The City of Mountain View Visual Arts Committee seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create public artwork for Mora Park, a planned neighborhood park at the corner of Ortega Avenue and Mora Drive. The park is a 0.45-acre site designed to provide a loop trail with pathways through orchard groves, lawn and play areas, fitness equipment, picnic tables, benches, and an agricultural theme. The Mountain View City Council has requested integration of art pieces with park elements, such as benches or bicycle racks, rather than stand-alone pieces. The VAC encourages functional art that incorporates the park's infrastructure or amenities, and all artwork must be accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Applications must be submitted online via CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org and must include: artist resumé, five to ten images of current artworks completed within the past two years demonstrating capability for durable outdoor work, annotated images with title, date, dimensions, media type, and installation location, a final proposal including design and estimated commission time, and a total artwork fee including design, fabrication, transportation, installation, and structural engineering costs. The artist is responsible for obtaining building permits and structural engineering services; permit fees will be paid by the City. Only the first 120 applications will be accepted.

Eligibility is open to professional artists and artist teams over 18 years old residing in California. The VAC is requesting proposals for artwork totaling $5,000, $10,000, or $20,000, and is open to selecting multiple art installations and/or multiple artists. The selection process will be conducted by the VAC with final approval from the Mountain View City Council. Selected artwork is to be installed in spring 2021. The City intends to bid park construction in summer 2020 and complete construction in early 2021, with the expectation that the artist will install the artwork during the construction phase. All costs associated with visiting the site, preparing proposals, or attending VAC meetings shall be borne by the artist.
