City of Miami Lakes Youth Center Public Art Commission

The Town of Miami Lakes is seeking professional visual artists to create a permanent, site-specific artwork for the Miami Lakes Youth Center. The 3,750 square foot facility, completed in November 2015, features a lobby area, study room, game room, outdoor patio, and breezeway entrance. The building is designed to provide a fun, safe, and positive environment for youth programming in arts, culture, education, health and wellness, recreation, and skill development.

Artists must be experienced professional visual artists demonstrating innovative, contemporary, and creative approaches. Town of Miami Lakes resident artists are encouraged to apply. Town of Miami Lakes employees, selection panelists, and their immediate family members are excluded from participation. The artist is responsible for fully developing the artwork within the allocated budget, including design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and all associated implementation costs.

A Professional Advisory Committee will identify finalists who will receive a $500 honorarium to develop specific proposals. Selection criteria include previous artistic accomplishment, public art experience, and initial approach to the project. The timeline is critical: application deadline is August 23, 2016; shortlisted artists notified by August 29-September 2, 2016; artists orientation September 6-9, 2016; finalist interviews October 17-21, 2016; town approval November 2016; design development January 2017; fabrication substantially complete February 2017; installation March 2017; project completion end of March 2017. Applicants must be able to adhere to this tight schedule.
